This session will address how to determine what types of board members you need and how to recruit them.
The learning objectives of this lab include how to:
- Determine the right size and composition of your board
- Evaluate the strengths & weaknesses of your board and identify gaps
- Build a recruitment plan to attract new board members
This hands-on lab is geared toward board and staff members of small nonprofit arts and cultural nonprofit organizations in the South side of Chicago although it’s open for anyone to attend.
Carrie Spitler joined Snow City Arts as Executive Director in 2013 and has led the organization through strategic planning, strengthened assessment efforts, board development and increased fundraising capacity to fully support the mission. She was selected through a competitive process for the University of Chicago’s inaugural cohort of the 2015 Chicago Leadership Academy and is a member of the Steering Committee of the Civic Knowledge Project’s Southside Arts and Humanities Network. Prior to joining Snow City Arts, Carrie serve for 10 years as the Executive Director of the Neighborhood Writing Alliance, a social justice and popular education literary arts organization, and as Publisher of the Journal of Ordinary Thought. From 1997 to 2002, she was the Director of Development at Access Living. Carrie holds a BS in Political Science from Central Michigan University, and a Certificate in Baking and Pastry from Kendall College.
