Board Development Consulting

The Arts & Business Council’s Board Development Consulting (BDC) service is designed to improve board effectiveness in non-profit arts groups.

BDC fee-based services are delivered by senior consultants who have both board membership and board consulting experience.  They employ consistent methodologies and approaches, designed to produce measurable results. BDC helps arts professionals and boards to optimize their performance. Our consultants work with boards as a group or provide individual coaching for board chairs, members and staff, tailoring services to meet our clients’ needs.

BDC services include:

  • Board and Executive Leadership Consulting and Coaching - specific problems are addressed; on-going or “as needed” coaching empowers directors and/or key staff to improve effectiveness, including team building or retreat facilitation.
  • Specialized Training - may include board fundraising, effective board practices and meeting management.
  • Board Recruitment and Transition - we help define selection criteria and performance expectations for board members and assist the board and staff in developing effective transition plans.
  • Governance Performance Development - defining the board's role and distinguishing board from staff accountabilities; developing a sound board structure and processes that reflect strategic purposes and priorities while enhancing relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Board Evaluation - with smARTscope, an online management self-assessment tool, we can independently advise on the design and implementation of board improvement programs.
  • Performance Management - we help boards define clear performance expectations, facilitate performance review discussions, resolve performance issues and develop an effective monitoring framework for the performance of the board and key staff members to foster a strong partnership.
