On BOARD Graduates Take the Plunge

Like most graduations, the end is really more about the beginning of something new. After spending the last four months reading about the financial structures of nonprofits, discussing the generative board, listening to panelists explain the Chicago arts landscape and meeting with numerous arts organizations, the Spring 2010 On BOARD class is ready to serve.

The 14 dedicated professionals will now begin to serve as board members. They are joining organizations--including the Remy Bumppo Theatre Company, About Face Theatre and 826CHI--and like most graduates, their journey is just beginning.

“Serving on a board requires generously giving your time, energy, passion and talent,” noted A&BC On BOARD Program Manager Kristen Romans, “I’m so impressed by the willingness of On BOARD graduates to volunteer as board members of an arts organization. It’s this kind of long-term commitment that really helps the arts community thrive.”

After going through an intensive five-session training, the candidates are well prepared and excited for what lies ahead. Some graduates, like Fred Steinhauer, have even joined multiple boards. Fred joined the board of PianoForte Foundation, Apollo Chorus of Chicago and Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras and he’s ready to put what he’s learned into practice.

“The most important thing that I learned from the On BOARD program is that we are participants in the impact that art has on the lives of those who experience it. What we do together as partners--business, board of directors, artists and stakeholders--enables an artistic director to achieve a dream, an organization its mission and inspires all those who participate with a sense of value and fulfillment. What we do, the art we produce and the music from our heart, moves the mind and spirit, touches the soul and enriches our lives and community.”

As nonprofit arts organizations continue to weather a challenging funding climate along with the necessity of building and engaging audiences around their mission, an energized and committed board takes on even more import. With this in mind, A&BC is particularly proud of its On BOARD graduates as their efforts as board members will have a long-term impact on the entire cultural community. Please join the A&BC in congratulating the Spring 2010 On BOARD class – Sylvia Alston, Mangai Arumugam, Elevene Bryant, Sandra Davis, Laura Fox, Saran Jenkins, Norah Jones, Drew Kent, Katie Lemon, Carole Meiselman, Minda Raffe, Bernadette Rasmussen, Fred Steinhauer and Jill Whiteman.
